Petersen First to Sign Coalition to Reduce Spending Pledge

Kansas City, MO. — Austin Petersen, candidate for U.S. Senate in Missouri, is the first in the Missouri U.S. Senate race to sign the Coalition to Reduce Spending's Reject the Debt Pledge, and joins hundreds of candidates and elected officials from across the country, including Rep. Steve Chabot (OH-01), Sen. Ted Cruz (TX), Rep. Doug Collins (GA-9), Rep. Mark Sanford (SC-1), and Rep. Warren Davidson (OH-8).

“Austin has always been a fiscal hard-liner, which is especially needed today with our nation's $21+ trillion debt." said Jeffrey Carson, manager for the Austin Petersen campaign. "This pledge was a no-brainer for our campaign, and a commitment to balanced budgets and reduced fiscal spending should be at the forefront of any campaign to run for U.S. Senate in 2018.”

The Coalition to Reduce Spending is a non-partisan advocacy organization dedicated to limiting federal spending. The Reject the Debt spending pledge commits elected officials and candidates to (1) consider all spending open for reduction and vote only for budgets that present a path to balance and (2) vote against any appropriations bill that increases total spending and against the authorization or funding of new programs without offsetting cuts in other programs.

Jonathan Bydlak, president of the Coalition to Reduce Spending, released the following statement in response to the news:

“Powerful special interests stand opposed to reducing federal spending, and election promises are often as temporary as the races that produce them. For any candidate to sign this commonsense commitment shows dedication far above average.”

Petersen has put spending cuts at the forefront of his campaign’s message, with vocal opposition of the recent omnibus spending bill as well as a call to congressional office holders to pass individual appropriations bills, something which hasn't been done since the 90's.

Petersen is the founder of the online news source, The Libertarian Republic, and has also worked as a Producer for Judge Andrew Napolitano’s show Freedomwatch on Fox Business.
